The Yew Tree

Lilith

On wings of night I moved
Over the dark waters
Singing to the Mother.

In the tree of knowledge
I had my being.
Owls nested in my hair.

My fruit nourished
The awakening light,
My serpent sister.

A thousand glittering eyes
Ranged in the depths of night
Am I, the primordial darkness.

The brush of an owl's wing in the twilight,
The terror of love's ecstasy
Shall be my mark upon my priestess.

musings on darkness and light (17-10-2003)

I was chatting with a friend about the meaning of darkness and light, and hence the meaning of Lilith. In Paganism, they mean rather different things than in mainstream thinking. These are the meanings I associate with them (in no particular order).

darkness... moist fertile earth, rest, sleep, dreams, healing, moon and stars, hidden wisdom (banished(?) by patriarchy and/or christianity), unconscious, underworld, yin, containment, silence, enveloping, cave, womb, vagina, inner space, menstruation, wild sexuality, transforming power of madness, non-conformity, witches & shamans, death, night, cold, winter, north, instinct, intuition, water(?), earth(?), entropy(?), chaos, desire, contraction, memory, hole, inductive, gestation, autumn, winter, owls, yew tree, birch tree (which is the shamans' world tree), minerals hidden in the earth, feminine principle, silver, Lilith, inbreath

light... expansion, outbreath, sunlight, growth, sight, heat, insight, intellect, revelation, air(?), fire(?), masculine principle, clarity, birth, spring, summer, satisfaction(?), hawk, eagle, hill, energy, conformity, druids, oak, outer-ness, assertive, gold

and of course, there is a third thing that contains both light and dark, i.e. space...

space... sound, singing bowl, well, gravity, memory, moon, waves of the sea, singing, starlight, hearing, expansion & contraction, breathing, abstract, connection, inner and outer, aether, all four elements, spirit, nested holeyness
